Greetings Sixth Graders,
You have been chosen to be ecological advisors to the White House! Please read the message below.
Dear Students,
As you know, we care deeply about the environment. As you may know, cars produce pollution when they burn gasoline to run their engines. Some cars are more friendly to the environment than others. We need your help to determine which cars the government should allow car manufacturers to sell and which cars the government should ban.
Sincerely,
White House Environmental Team
TASK:
You will research various cars, trucks, and SUVs to determine which are most environmentally friendly (using gasoline miles per gallon) and write to the president suggesting one car, one truck, and one SUV you think are the best. You must defend your answer by explaining why the vehicles you have chosen are more environmentally friendly than other vehicles you have researched. This way, the government can take action to ensure a healthy planet.
Best,
Ms Blane
Process:
In order to give the president the best possible recommendation, you must follow the steps below.
1. Research the concept of miles per gallon (sometimes abbreviated mpg). Take notes with your group, so you can include this idea in your letter to the president. Ask yourself: what does miles per gallon tell me? what is better for the environment - a vehicle with a higher mpg or one with a lower mpg?
2. Determine what the average fuel economy (miles per gallon) is for cars, trucks, and SUVs. Write these in your notebook. Your notes will be part of your grade.

3. Research at least 5 different cars, trucks, and SUVs. Record each of their mpgs in your notebook. Below are some sites you can use:

4. Create a graph for each category - cars, trucks, and SUVs - that compares the five vehicles you chose. You can use the site below to help.

5. Use you graphs to determine which of each vehicle is best for the environment.
6. Make a presentation explaining which car, truck, and SUV you chose and why. Be sure to include your graphs and reference them in your presentation.
