January 17 - January 20

_ We took our unit test in math this week. Overall the class did quite well. I have a few students who still need to make up the test, so those won’t be sent home until early next week. We are also taking a cumulative mid year assessment on Wednesday 1/25. I have sent home a packet of practice problems along with an answer key for students to use to practice and study. This packet is NOT to be turned in. It is up to the kids which pages they do for practice. It is just meant as a study aide.

Yesterday students got to perform their self-designed experiments. They did quite well and some got some surprising results. We will compile our data and see if we can figure our the pieces of the puzzle to give us more information about our original Hot Yellow Gas investigation.

Have a question about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); ask a Flood Brook 6th grader.   On Tuesday we read and discussed letters written by two war veterans who shared vivid memories of combat.  Yesterday we read articles focusing on the symptoms of PTSD.  We concluded this mini-study by listing all the things family and friends might do support someone suffering from PTSD.

We’ve started drafting our fictional narratives.  This week students finished their superhero origin stories (prologue).  The students are exploring how to move their plots forward by placing as much thought & emphasis on the pictures as much as the words.  Students who’ve chosen to word process their stories are doing a fabulous job recognizing and writing scenes SHOWING the action.

The challenges of building a homestead have been our social studies focus.  We discussed the dangers of traveling to the frontier via wagon train, and the ordeals pioneers faced when confronted with the most mundane tasks:  getting water, breaking sod for a garden, cooking, etc.
